Before stocking a pet-tech product
A practical ranging brief covering customer fit, service, regional supply and the commercial questions a public product page cannot answer.

A convincing demonstration is the beginning of a ranging decision. The next step is to establish whether the product can be sold, explained and supported in your market.
Start with a defined customer
Write the customer problem in one sentence. Then record the mechanism, the alternatives, the space or setup required and the maintenance that remains. Use the same explanation on the shelf, online and in staff training.
Ask for the commercial facts
- Exact regional SKU, package contents and supply entity.
- Wholesale price basis, tax treatment, minimum order, freight and payment terms.
- Territory, authorised channels and any marketplace restrictions.
- Lead time, replenishment, spare parts and consumables.
- Returns handling, warranty responsibilities and an escalation contact.
- Demonstration units, staff training and approved product assets.
These are unanswered due-diligence questions, not claims about any supplier. A public distributor contact does not establish favourable terms or available territory.
Make software part of the product discussion
Ask which functions require an account, internet access or a paid plan. Request the current support and update policy and a process for account transfer or returned devices. Assess the work this creates for customer service.
Use a small, measurable pilot
Before broad expansion, define how you will assess customer understanding, sell-through, returns reasons and support time. Record these separately. A successful launch demonstration alone is not evidence of profitable repeat sales.
Keep editorial and commercial roles clear
A supplier can provide documentation without buying coverage. Paid partnerships should be identified and kept separate from editorial selection. Any consultancy or distribution interest involving the publisher should be disclosed where relevant.
